The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra(JSO) is thrilled to present a concert collaboration with the Roxbury Bandshell featuring the French horn section of the orchestra on Saturday, April 24,at 3:00 p.m.

The program showcases Johnstown Symphony Orchestra hornists Dennis Emert, Principal Horn; Michael Scheimer, Denise Gamble, and Amber Fantini. The hour-long concert features a variety of thematic music to highlight the hillside panorama that makesthe Roxbury Bandshell’s location so special. The public is encouraged to come as a family and bring friends, lawnchairs, and picnicfood and drinksto enjoy during the concert. ”The tone for the performance is light-hearted and casual;perfect for getting out of the house to enjoy some music on a spring Saturday afternoon,” says Jessica Satava, JSO Executive Director. The concert is free, but asuggested donation of $10 per personwill be gratefully accepted. No tickets are required.

The historic connection of the JSO and the Roxbury Bandshellmakes this concert even more special. “We are proud to participate with the JSO for this spectacular event,” says Mary Borkow, the President of the Roxbury Bandshell Preservation Alliance.“The Roxbury Bandshell was built and completed in 1939. In fact, the JSO performed on opening day. Built during President Frankin D. Roosevelt’swork progress initiative during his administration, we are proud to announce that only 27 bandshells were built in the United States and Johnstown has the only remaining historical site.”

The French horn evolved from ahunting hornand other hornsthat were used to communicate over long distances. Even as it became essential to the sound of the symphony orchestra, the sound still evokes the outdoors. In this concert, experience the majesty of the French horn outdoors, resounding in nature and making the hills come alive with music.

“I am so excited about this concert featuring our four JSO French horn players performing outdoors,” says James Blachly, Grammy-winning JSO Music Director. “There is nothing quite like this instrument’s sound playing off of the hills and blending with thenatural beauty of our region. You won’t want to miss this unique concert experience!”
