Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra Concert

Date:
Sunday, January 20, 2019 - 3:30pm

The Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra (JSYO) winter performance will take place on Sunday, January 20th at 3:30pm at the Arcadia Theater in Windber led by Conductor David Anderson (biography follows this release). The JSYO Honors String Quartet and JSYO Honors Brass Quintet will play their debut performances of the season.

Featured on the program is the thrilling tone poem Finlandia by Jean Sibelius. This piece takes listeners on a musical journey of oppression, struggle, and hope for the future. It became an unofficial national anthem for the Finnish people in their fight for independence from Russia in the early 20th century. The JSYO is also proud to collaborate with Dr. Linda Jennings, cello professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (biography follows this release), in the first movement of Lalo’s Cello Concerto. Also being performed is a movement from Tchaikovsky’s ballet Sleeping Beauty, Elliot Del Borgo’s Essay for Orchestra, selections from the movie Pirates of the Caribbean, and Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

The JSYO is made up of over 40 students from 12 schools from Johnstown and the surrounding region. Students rehearse weekly and present concerts in the fall/winter and the spring of each year. Students range in age from ninth grade to college, and audition annually. Admission is $7 at the door, and children under the age of 12 are free.
