128th Anniversary of the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889

Location:  Johnstown Flood National Memorial

The following events will be taking place at Johnstown Flood National Memorial on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, in commemoration of the 128th Anniversary of the Great Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889:

9:00 am-10:00 pm-The Visitor Center will be open. Showings of the park film “Black Friday” will take place every quarter past the hour with the first showing of the day at 9:15 am and the last showing of the day at 9:15 pm.

4:07 pm-There will be a memorial wreath laying on both of the abutments of the South Fork Dam in commemoration of the exact moment when the flood wave hit Johnstown.

6:00 pm-8:00 pm-There will be children’s activities in the park picnic area, off of South Abutment Road. These activities will be held rain or shine.

7:00 pm-10:00 pm-Annual Luminaria. 2,209 luminaries lining the remains of the South Fork Dam and placed in other locations throughout the park will be lit; one for each of the victims of the Johnstown Flood. Thanks to our friends at nearby Forest Hills Elementary School, the names of the victims of Johnstown Flood will be written on each luminary bag.
