Theatre Director, Nathan Magee, noted that his choice of “Songs for a New World” was driven by the beauty and lyrics of the songs and the outstanding drama of the play. “I have loved this musical for a long time and Jason Robert Brown, the author, is one of my favorite modern composers,” Magee said. “It also fits in perfectly with our college theme of Authentic Discourse.
“The play is about people dealing with important decisions in their life,” added Magee. “The turning points, if you will. There is no discourse more important than that we have with ourselves. The play is about people trying to be authentic and honest in the situations they find themselves. I think it fits incredibly well with the campus theme.”
The 16 songs of “Songs for a New World” each tells a story. Each title is linked thematically with an overall theme of exploration and choice.
“Many of the songs are solos,” explained Director Magee, “but we also have a dynamic ensemble that helps to tell the story in each of these songs. While it is different from many musicals people are accustomed to seeing; it is a tremendous musical that I am sure all will enjoy. It is equal parts moving, inspirational, sad, fearful, and hopeful,” he added.
