Em's Original Sub Shop was opened in 1952 by Emma and Pete Spinelli. The story goes, when Em's opened, a gang of boys would come to the lunch counter, buy a soda, and eat packed lunches they brought from home. This gave Pete and Emma the idea to make and sell sandwiches at the store. Pete began buying 12-inch Italian buns from the nearby Ferndale Bakery, and Emma added their own special sliced deli meat, cheese, fresh vegetables, and to top it off, she developed a special dressing. And so the Em’s Submarine Sandwich was born. It quickly became a Johnstown favorite and kept Pete and Emma going strong. The shop has since expanded into five locations. They offer freshly made subs, wraps, baked goods, and many other tasty options. See their website for a full menu.

It was 1974 when our country had its first gas crisis. The price of gasoline was skyrocketing, gas stations were closing nationwide, and carmakers began exploring how to develop cars that got better mileage. But for George “Jig” Warren III and Gary “Moe” Meszaros, it wasn’t about better mileage or for that matter even obeying the new 55 M.P.H speed limit. It was about finding a home to preserve the culture of those old gas stations and high-powered muscle cars. So was born Quaker Steak & Lube®, a “Cook Your Own Steak” restaurant that gave old muscle cars a permanent home, which included a 1936 Chevrolet, frozen in time on the original hydraulic grease rack.Today, “The Lube®” serves over 30 million wings annually, has bottled sauces for retail sale, has won the title of “Best Wings USA,” and has hundreds of local, national, and international awards for their sauce recipes. Over 50 locations throughout the United States, “The Lube®” is still rescuing muscle cars, vintage cars, trucks and a vast selection of custom and antique motorcycles, giving them good homes hanging from the walls and ceilings in each restaurant.
In 1924, Celestine and Mary A. Rillo, who had immigrated in the early 1900’s from the Northern Central region of Italy, built their home at 2200 Graham Avenue. The Rillo’s lived on the second floor and operated a general store and meat market on the first floor. In 1937, the Rillo’s decided to open a restaurant at the location. Grandma Rillo was in charge of the kitchen where tasteful and authentic Italian foods were prepared from old world recipes. In 1965, the restaurant was passed on to her daughter Mildred and her husband Anthony Rizzo. In the years that followed, “Rizzo’s” established itself as a regional favorite. After Mr. Rizzo’s passing in 1983, Millie and her children continued the family business. They offer many fine dining options, visit their website for a full menu.
